Mentally Disordered Offenders

This one-day foundation Mental Health course aims to increase participants’ awareness of the definitions, legislation and management of mentally disordered offenders in the statutory arena. It also explores different mental disorders, dual diagnosis and how to recognise and manage them. The event offers information on how to refer to and liaise with other agencies to assist risk reduction and management. The course is conducted in a comfortable, safe environment, and offers participants to opportunity to address perceptions, and increase knowledge and confidence in dealing with Mentally Disordered Offenders.

Target Audience:

This course provides for all those who work with mentally disordered offenders, either in statutory or partnership agencies or charities.

Objectives

By the end of the courses, participants will:

Explore and identify the definitions and designations of mental disorder and mentally disordered offenders
By exercise and discussion examine some common mental health disorders and dual diagnosis situations
Define the difference between 'mad' and 'bad' when assessing and managing offenders
Explore the relevant legislation regarding mental disorder and offending
Examine a case history in order to increase knowledge and confidence in managing a mentally disordered offender
Receive laminates and handouts in order to consolidate learning in the workplace
